What Running Application Do You Use?

I need your help.

I really like tracking the number of miles I run every day on my iPhone. I like it so much, in fact, that when it doesn’t happen for one reason or another, it kind of pisses me off.

I use Nike Plus, but am not really satisfied with the website. I don’t like how the route builder works, and I am not overly fond of the way they keep trying to make me purchase things. It also irritates me that I am continually logged out of the webpage, even when I tell it to keep me logged in.

I know of two other applications, but am not well versed in their usage. Endomondo and RunKeeper.

Are there others out there that I am not aware of? I am sure there are, but what are the good ones?

I have been running a long time, but that is more out of necessity of my job. The actual desire to run is new, and I am having a lot of fun with it.

I will be asking these kinds of questions periodically. I have a couple of them lined up. Let me know what your opinion is. I will keep  researching and will let you know what I come up with.

  1. I use Google Maps for bicycling. It works really well for my purposes. If you have a rough idea of where you’re going you can usually get the maps to do what you want them to do.

That said, I don’t go out of town much, so I can’t speak to how well it would work for, for example, mountain biking or hiking.

    • I want something that will track min/mile and will let me go off-road and still track where I have been. I also like looking at heat maps/run analysis to see where my slow miles were, and what the elevation was like when I was slowing down/speeding up.

Speaking of speeding up, you should be going faster towards getting to “the Hat”.

  2. I use Runkeeper religiously. A lot of the times I use my garmin 305 to track them and upload the data to RK. I have several friends that us edomondo. But I find RK to be the best.

    • I was just getting ready to download it, but the reviews for the iPhone 4S were terrible. Saying things along the lines of “it is terrible for training” because of how off the GPS is. The last comment was from Jun 9th though, is the issue resolved?

      • I haven’t had any trouble with it and I use a 4S. When I do have problems it is usually when I am deep in the trails with tons of trees over head. Give it a shot! 🙂

  3. I ran with endomondo tonight. I liked it. Will try RunKeeper tomorrow night. It looks a little more user friendly.

I did four miles and found Endomondo to be a little off (about .10 at the end), but then I decided I never really validated Nike+ so either or both could be wrong. I need to do a road run and then check against google maps I think. Maybe that will be tomorrow’s project and I will run all three apps?
